Quest #12

The Sunstone

"The lands of Lord Narran have been cursed! For months, black clouds have filled the sky, turning day into night. The trees and crops are withering. Soon thousands of people will starve.

Lord Narran stands before you. "The Evil Wizard Teraptus is behind this. He forced a dwarf to create a disk called the Sunstone, which keeps us in darkness. You must go to the Wizard's castle and destroy the Sunstone - before it's too late for us all!"

Wandering Monster - BugBear

To succeed in this quest the Heroes must destroy the Sunstone.

Notes:

A. This chest is trapped with a gas trap. If the chest is opened without disarming the trap it will do 2 Body Points damage to any Hero in the room. The chest contains the Dwarven Hammer (see artifact card).

B. This chest contains 1000 gold coins, plus 2 Potions of Healing.

C. This room contains the Sunstone. Place the Sunstone tile on the square marked 'SS'. When the Heroes open the door, read "A glittering disk hangs in the center of this room, suspended from the ceiling by three strong ropes. The disk appears to be solid ice. A great sun has been carved upon the face, and strange symbols line the edge. Suddenly, the Evil Wizard Teraptus appears. 'So!', he hisses. 'You have found the Sunstone. For that you will die!". Teraptus knows these spells: Lightning Bolt, Sleep, Summon Undead.

To destroy the Sunstone, the Heroes may either cut the ropes or attack the Sunstone directly.

To cut the ropes, the Heroes must either throw a weapon or shoot a missile at each rope. Since the ropes are so small, each attack gets 1/2 (round up) the normal attack dice. Each rope has 1 Body Point, but all three ropes must be cut before the Sunstone falls. When this happens, read "The Sunstone hangs in the air for a moment, then drops to the ground. When it hits," After this read the description labeled 'When the Sunstone is destroyed:'.

To attack the Sunstone directly, the Heroes must hit it with a thrown weapon, a missile weapon, or a fire spell such as Fire of Wrath or Ball of Flame. The Sunstone has 3 Body Points. Roll 2 defense dice for it.
When the Sunstone is destroyed: Read "The Sunstone explodes into a million shining drops of water. The ground begins to shake, and a huge crack forms in the ceiling. A shaft of sunlight pierces the clouds, flooding the room with white light. The curse has been lifted!".

Note: Teraptus will stay and fight until he has 0 Body Points. When this happens read "The final blow was too much for Teraptus. He collapses to the ground before you. You quickly check his pulse; he still lives though he is sorely wounded. Lord Narran would give much if you could bring Teraptus to him alive."

The Heroes can kill Teraptus with one more attack. If one of the Heroes decides to carry Teraptus, tell him that he cannot wield a weapon or shield while doing so. He may put Teraptus down and draw a weapon, but this takes a turn - while doing so he may not attack. Any monsters still in the room will continue to attack the Heroes after Teraptus reaches 0 Body Points.

Whether or not the Heroes try to carry Teraptus back to the entrance, any monsters left alive on the board will head for the Heroes to attack.

If the Heroes succeed in delivering Teraptus to Lord Narran read: "You deliver Teraptus to Lord Narran. He is overjoyed. 'At last we have captured this vile Wizard,' he says. 'He will now pay for his crimes. We will execute him as soon as we can get him back to my castle. All the realm must see the punishment for those who serve Chaos to destroy our lands and enslave our people. Please accept this as a reward for your valiant services.' Lord Narran hands each of you a chest with 1000 gold pieces in it."
